In nearly every situation we can configure a complete drivetrain package that will be much more responsive through all the gears. This can be easily resolved by matching up the transmission’s gear ratios with the corresponding rear gear ratio and tire size to match the performance you are looking for. Another common misconception is that the vehicle will not be as responsive due to the available gear ratios. True, the 1980’s were not a glorious decade for high powered performance vehicles and that’s where most of this accepted truth comes from, and by all rights those early overdrives weren’t capable of the demands we place on transmissions today.Ĭonsider how much more power a stock LS engine makes versus a stock Gen. This can be true in certain situations, but the majority of the new transmissions will handle far more power than their older counterparts when comparing them at a stock built level. There can be some misunderstandings that the overdrive transmissions are not as strong or able to handle as much horsepower or torque as the older non-overdrive units. We get plenty of calls from those who are new to the idea of installing a modern overdrive in their classic car, and many times there is some confusion as to the benefits of making this upgrade. All of those things combined to get the overdrive off on the wrong foot with most car enthusiasts. Thus the mainstream overdrive transmissions and pollution control systems were born into existence at the expense of horsepower.

The tried and true 4-speed manuals and 3-speed automatics were the only thing we knew, and they worked well, so why would anyone want to change that? During the late 1970s and early 1980s we saw a push to create more economical cars that produced lower emissions.Īs most of us know, it had a lot, if not all, to do with the fuel shortages and government requiring the automakers to comply with EPA regulations on fuel consumption and emissions.

But if you are converting a LWB manual, or want to use a standard manual console, you'll need the short transmission top cover from the E-type or one or two older saloon models. It wasn’t that long ago that overdrive transmissions were not standard equipment in every new vehicle on the road.

If you are converting a LWB auto to MOD and you don't care about original parts it's not really an issue as you just cut the tunnel top further back. The only thing to watch out for is that the XJ6 MOD bos does not bring the lever out in the right place. I suspect a V12 in the lower gears might be too much? Don't leave the reverse interlock off though as this will trash the OD in short order. You get a low-range sporty box with the 3.54 diff for hooning around, plus a nice higher-geared 'touring' box with the overdrive engaged on those four ratios. This is how I had it on my old D-replica and my new one. You can leave the top gear interlock off if you want. Their comments were that the E-type wasn't an especially heavy car so I assume this is a significant factor, except didn't the MkX / 420G have an MOD option? Of course Jag overdrives are wired so they only operate in top gear, which keeps thing a bit more under control I guess.

I asked wouldn't it need the competition upgrade and they said no, but I paid for it anyway.įor people to turn down revenue when faced with a punter obviously happy to pay extra for an 'insurance' upgrade, I think they must know what they are talking about. The gearbox might just survive, but I can think of no other car with this capacity engine which had an OD fittedįWIW the Laycock engineers who run the repair place in Sheffield told me it would be fine. If the 4 speed will fit is the V12 bell housing required?Ĭhristopher storey wrote:I am deeply dubious about the Laycock overdrive having the capacity to take the V12's torque. So will an XJ 6 4 speed go on the back of the V12 and would the associated overdrive also fit - will they take the power. However as the series 3 had a 4 speed manual I can argue that is a period mod - likewise as the wheelbase is longer than earlier models an overdrive would be nice - also can argue would be a period mod.Ī v12 4 speed is impossible to get, but I understand then XJ 6 4 speed is the same box. I can accept the limited use aspect but having a 90s gearbox would not be considered meeting the originality requirement. The downside is that the vehicle can only be used for club events and that the vehicle must not be modified form original but can have period accessories or modifications.

In Australia we have "club" registration and the costs are about 1/5th of those on full registration. I have a OTS auto which I have a home made conversion to a Getrag 290 5 speed gearbox.Īs I am now retired and have 3 vehicles on full registration (fully taxed) the costs are a bit high.
